"If you give a man a fish, you will feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will feed himself for a lifetime."

The Fishing School is an after school program and safe haven for children who live in one of the poorest communities in Washington DC. Emphasis is placed upon the education and motivational needs of children ages 5-15 years old, recognizing that education can and will "unlock the door" to knowledge and opportunity as well as break the cycle of poverty and deprivation.

The Fishing School was founded by Tom Lewis, a retired DC police officer. After spending 20 yrs as a police officer, he retired and gave the rest of his time to volunteering in the community. In 1990, Mr. Lewis founded The Fishing School as a means to helping inner-city youth to overcome the challenges they face. The Fishing School was born from his belief that the promise of America can only be realized if all of our children get the love and care that will enable them to mature into responsible adults and leaders of tomorrow. The children are offered tutoring services, homework assistance, computer classes, art and historical awareness and choir, dance and drama classes.

The MoonSong Performance Ensemble plans to donate funds to The Fishing School and to provide cultural and academic enrichment to the Fishing School's Female Youth Enrichment Program. Every Saturday, girls between the ages of 8 and 12 participate in home economics projects, arts and crafts projects, personal development, and cultural and recreational activities. As Mr. Lewis says, "Real change happens street by street, heart by heart, one soul, one conscience at a time. It happens in places like The Fishing School."
